SORRENTO
and sant'agnello

we spent the week at sant'agnello, a small town that forms a suburb to the city of sorrento. it was a nice hotel, overlooking the bay of naples although not right on the coast. it was nice to be staying a bit outside of the touristy center of sorrento, although all of the sorrentine peninsula is touristy. And since there is only one road in and out of the area, a road that goes through the middle of a half-dozen towns, traffic was terrible and it sometimes took us a few hours just to drive the ten miles to the major highway!

the city of sorrento is set up on the cliffs above the port, dominated by old luxury hotels like this one.

from the cliff edge near that old hotel, another beautiful view of the bay of naples presents itself.

more modern hotels are crammed against the old ones, each trying to offer the best views..

hotels continue all along the coast, mixed in with vacation homes.

the town has narrow streets and many shops.

among the most beautiful sights was the medieval cloister to Sorrento's cathedral.

we happened to be in sant'agnello for the feast of corpus christi, and saw this local religious procession.

All week long, we ate in local family-run restaurants in Sant'Agnello, most twice since it is such a small town. each day, we went out and explored the region.
