Sant'angelo in formis

sant'angelo is a tiny community we stopped at on our drive back toward rome. its only real attraction is a romanesque church, built in the 11th century by the Benedictine monks of monte cassino. we visited the church, then had lunch at a small, family-run roadside restaurant, and then continued on our way north.

above the entrance portal is the first of many frescoes, showing the patron of the church, st. michael the archangel.

also on the porch, a fresco of two men embracing, with a palm tree behind them.

these postcard images show how covered the walls of the interior are with frescoes. This was probably typical of medieval italian churches, although most of these frescoes have been obliterated by later repainting or renovations.
