Sintra, continued

Sintra's history really began with the Arabs, who fortified one of its mountain peaks.
The Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors) was built in the eighth century.
It offers a breathtaking view over the town of Sintra and far beyond.

Far below in the town of Sintra itself is another reminder of the Moorish presence in Portugal.
It is the palace of the former Arab governors of Sintra, called the Palacio nacional de Sintra.
Most of what survives dates from the fourteenth century, when it served as a royal residence.
It is easily recognized by its twin cones, which are the old chimneys above the huge kitchens.

The design work on the ceilings was impressive--wait, is that a deer with toilet paper caught in its antlers?

Among the more unusual sights: this painting (above right) of John the Baptist wearing a teddy!
